Will the Digg Effect make a comeback?

Om Malik's avatarGigaom

During the latter half of the naughties (2000s), Digg was one of the premier destinations on the web. If your story ended up on the front page of Digg, then you were rewarded by hundreds of thousands of page views, quite a bounty considering publishers big and small made (and still make money) for page-view based advertising. John Borthwick, chief executive of Betaworks, had a plan  — Digg still was a good brand and was an ideal vehicle for his vision of a social-data powered recommendation service and news reader. Where to find your next read: Book recommendation sites you should know about

Laura Hazard Owen's avatarGigaom

Looking for new books to add to your summer reading list? You probably already know to check sources like Goodreads and the New York Times book reviews, but that’s not always enough. Here are a few of my favorite non-obvious sources for online book recommendations.

The short story of Longreads, according to founder Mark Armstrong

Om Malik's avatarGigaom

Mark Armstrong, like many people in New York City, was a commuter — he commuted to Time Inc.’s midtown Manhattan offices from Cobble HIll, Brooklyn, and it was the tedium of the commute that led him to seek ways to keep himself busy when he was without Wi-Fi. One day he found Instapaper, and before he knew it, there was a lot of stuff he could save and read when offline.

Soon he was asking the question: What if there were a service that aggregated the very best articles on the web for commuters like him to read on his iPhone? A single article a day would do. He asked the question to his Twitter freinds and asked them to share stories with him with the hashtag #longreads. Replies poured in, and so did links to other stories. And with that Longreads, a service that curates quality writing from…
