When Amazon(s amzn) launched its latest Kindle Fire tablets with Fire OS software in September, the company promised an update by mid-November that will bring new features to the devices. It’s mid-November and the software is here. On Monday, Amazon announced version 3.1 of the Fire OS for all current generation Kindle tablets. The updated software will wirelessly roll out in the coming weeks but device owners can apply the update manually by downloading it from Amazon’s support site today.
Since all of the features in Fire OS 3.1 were already announced, there aren’t any surprises. Still, the software will help make the overall Kindle Fire tablet experience a better one.

Social reading site Goodreads recently infuriated some users when it announced it will delete reviews that focus on an author’s behavior rather than on the contents of a book. Goodreads, which Amazon (s AMZN) acquired earlier this year, has said the policy change is necessary for maintaining a civil community on the site, but on Wednesday it apologized to some users whose reviews were deleted and said it will send them the text of those reviews for their “personal records.”
One user who received such an email posted it in full on BookLikes, a competing site that has seen an influx of users who switched over after boycotting Goodreads due to its new policy. The email said that “we should have notified you and provided you with a copy of your content when we deleted the reviews/shelves” and added:

What makes for a proper book review? Reading-based social network Goodreads says reviews that focus on an author’s behavior, rather than a book’s content, don’t have a place on the site — and announced Friday that it is going to start automatically deleting those reviews.
The new guidelines are infuriating some users who say that some authors’ bad behavior online should be a factor in book purchases. And the entire episode highlights the challenges that Goodreads, which was acquired by Amazon (s AMZN) earlier this year, faces as it adds users (CEO Otis Chandler recently announced the site has over 20 million members) and becomes more influential.
