  1. Interesting question… I am just reading my first book of this kind (although I think that it was actually published by a publishing house) and am impressed with the story but not so much the writing style. Dare I say, it seems amateur when compared to the more established authors. I guess the style and tone will come with time for authors like this, but there is a definite difference for me. Still, it is encouraging nonetheless.

    • I think digital authorship is opening a door for many would be authors and this is a good thing for many who would otherwise not have the opportunity. I think with traditional authorship the same would be so – that is, that there would still be poor quality work if opportunities existed for everyone to be able to have a go. I guess the editors and publishers generally manage to keep the really poor stuff from being published in the traditional world, whereas in the digital it really is far more open for poor quality material to become widely available. It is a case of being prepared to search and discover the gems in the dirt, using such means as make that possible. The old cliche of practice makes perfect also comes to mind.

  2. Agreed. I am all for the self-publishing angle and am keen to read what the results are like. I, myself, would like to publish a novel, but do not want to go down the route of finding a publisher. As I have a demanding full time job, I think that this route is the only really viable one.

Of course, I am sure that many will find my style amateur too – it’s inevitable without the correct level of professional intervention.
