When Amazon(s amzn) launched its latest Kindle Fire tablets with Fire OS software in September, the company promised an update by mid-November that will bring new features to the devices. It’s mid-November and the software is here. On Monday, Amazon announced version 3.1 of the Fire OS for all current generation Kindle tablets. The updated software will wirelessly roll out in the coming weeks but device owners can apply the update manually by downloading it from Amazon’s support site today.
Since all of the features in Fire OS 3.1 were already announced, there aren’t any surprises. Still, the software will help make the overall Kindle Fire tablet experience a better one.
For example, there’s deep in-content integration with Goodreads, making it easy to capture and share quotes with others on the social reading service. You can also see what Goodreads friends are reading or share a book…

Probably a good thing because nobody was going to buy it anyway: Sony (s SNE) is not going to sell its new e-reader, the PRS-T3 released earlier this month, in the United States.
The company cited “the region’s market changes” — i.e., competition from Amazon (s AMZN), Barnes & Noble (s BKS) and Kobo — as the reason it won’t launch here. Sony’s e-reader market share in the U.S. has dwindled to negligible levels in recent years.
Here’s Sony’s rationale, in a statement via The Digital Reader:
“Sony will not be offering the Reader PRS-T3 in the United States. In response to the region’s market changes, Sony will be focusing instead on mobile and tablet devices, including the Xperia Tablet Z and Xperia Z smartphone. Digital reading and ebooks remain an important priority for Sony. Reader Store will still help book lovers find and read their next story, anytime…

Here’s a sign that e-readers are struggling in the U.S.: E Ink Holdings, the Taiwan-based company that makes e-reader screens for companies such as Amazon (s AMZN), Barnes & Noble (s BKS) and Sony (s SNE), just had its worst quarter in four years. The company saw a net loss of NT $1.01 billion (USD $33.7 million) for the second quarter of 2013, and revenues were down 35 percent over the previous year to NT $2.93 billion (USD $98 million).
Market research companies have been forecasting the death of e-readers for awhile now as more consumers buy tablets. Nonetheless, E Ink Holdings sees growth ahead as e-readers become more popular outside the United States. “Customers [i.e., e-reader manufacturers] have put off their new product launches to the third quarter from the second quarter,” CFO Eddie Chen said (via the Taipei Times). In an investor presentation (PDF), E Ink noted that…
