How to read books from your local library on your tablet

Mark Crump's avatarGigaom

I’m a voracious reader, and read between 80 and 100 books a year. Obviously, this is a habit that gets expensive so I’m always looking for legal ways to still read and cut back on the spending. Until I got my iPad in 2010, I was a frequent customer of my town’s library. Once I got hooked on digital books, however, I never really went back.

Some of this is due to the fact that I live in a very small town (about 5,000 people). I often joke that there are more cows on my street than people. So, my library is very small. While we are tied into a regional network of libraries, the next closest library is still two towns over.

Amazon officially launches Kindle Unlimited, ebook and audiobook subscription service for $9.99/month

Laura Hazard Owen's avatarGigaom

Amazon(s AMZN) has officially launched Kindle Unlimited, the $9.99/month ebook and audiobook subscription service we told you about on Wednesday.

The details are, pretty much, what already leaked. The service is only available in the U.S. for now. About 640,000 titles are available, most from Amazon’s own publishing imprints or by self-published authors who’d previously enrolled their books in KDP Select. There are books from traditional publishers as well — no big-5 publishers — but Abrams, Algonquin, Workman, Open Road and Bloomsbury, among others. Two thousand audiobooks from Audible are included, and a membership to Kindle Unlimited comes with a free three-month Audible subscription.

“You can keep up to ten books at a time and there are no due dates,” according to Amazon’s help pages. “Read your Kindle Unlimited books on any Kindle device or free Kindle reading apps.”

One splashy series of note that is available: The first…

Oyster android

The $9.95 per month ebook subscription service Oyster, which was previously only available on iOS(s AAPL), expanded to Android(s GOOG), Kindle(s AMZN) Fire and Nook(s BKS) HD tablets Tuesday — thus removing one of the differentiating factors between it and rival service Scribd. New features include “read time” for books (there is a similar feature on Kindle e-readers) and the ability to turn a book’s pages using the volume buttons on an Android device. Oyster, which is based in NYC and launched in fall 2013, now has over 500,000 titles, with two of the big-five publishers — Simon & Schuster and HarperCollins — participating.
