Come on, Kobo, a $399 tablet? Really?

Laura Hazard Owen's avatarGigaom

Last September, Barnes & Noble (s BKS) launched two new tablets. The Nook HD and HD+, ranging in price from $199 to $299, were designed to be reader-centric devices. They included features like children’s accounts and curated “channels” to help readers discover new books.

These features, Barnes & Noble hoped, would be enough to attract buyers — but they weren’t kidding themselves that users would be persuaded to buy a Nook instead of an iPad. “You have an iPad, I have one,” a company exec said at a briefing at the time, seemingly acknowledging that the Nook HD wouldn’t be anybody’s first choice. Rather, Barnes & Noble clearly hoped that the Nook tablets’ prices and features might be enough to entice users away from other lower-priced tablets like the Kindle (s AMZN) Fire and Nexus (s GOOG) 7.

It didn’t work. Fast-forward a year and Barnes & Noble’s Nook business is…

Bad sign for e-readers? E Ink sales plunge

Laura Hazard Owen's avatarGigaom

Here’s a sign that e-readers are struggling in the U.S.: E Ink Holdings, the Taiwan-based company that makes e-reader screens for companies such as Amazon (s AMZN), Barnes & Noble (s BKS) and Sony (s SNE), just had its worst quarter in four years. The company saw a net loss of NT $1.01 billion (USD $33.7 million) for the second quarter of 2013, and revenues were down 35 percent over the previous year to NT $2.93 billion (USD $98 million).

Market research companies have been forecasting the death of e-readers for awhile now as more consumers buy tablets. Nonetheless, E Ink Holdings sees growth ahead as e-readers become more popular outside the United States. “Customers [i.e., e-reader manufacturers] have put off their new product launches to the third quarter from the second quarter,” CFO Eddie Chen said (via the Taipei Times). In an investor presentation (PDF), E Ink noted that…

Amazon reports loss on revenues of $15.7B; highlights Kindle success

Laura Hazard Owen's avatarGigaom

In a quarter when Amazon’s (S AMZN) stock price hit a record high, the company delivered a loss in its earnings report Thursday afternoon even as revenues rose. Earnings were -$0.02 per share, or a loss of $7 million, on revenue of $15.7 billion, compared to earnings of $0.01 per share, or $7 million, on revenue of $12.83 billion this time last year.

Analysts had expected earnings of $0.06 per share on revenues of $15.7 billion.

Amazon’s operating income, which analysts watch closely because they worry about Amazon’s razor-thin margins, fell 26 percent to $79 million. This time last year, it was $107 million.

Amazon’s stock rose to a record $308.69 earlier this month. This wasn’t precipitated by one big event, but July was a good month for Amazon in part because a U.S. federal judge found Apple (s AAPL) guilty of conspiring with publishers to fix ebook prices at…
